Raspberry Pi Zero (not the wi-fi model)
1ghz CPU
512mb RAM
HDMI output
Micro SD card
Runs off only a pissy 5v, at 1 amp.
(larger versions use 5v 2+ amps)
OS: Raspbian Stretch

New $8 computer ... drum roll ... delivered in an envelope.

Gotta be careful of static electricity and bon jovi goblins, so a new home is needed.
Plan A: Kicked a stick of old DDR2 ram out of it's case.

Nah, yuck, looks crap like that.

Plan B: Just tuck it and the USB hub into an old compact camera case.

That will do until I can afford a Tic-Tac box (they supposedly fit in there)

Little TV DaVo gave me a few years back is now HDMI mated with the Raspberry Pi
to give the shed it's own computer station again. (Been 2 years since I had anything in the shed)

Boots in 55 seconds. (edit: 40 seconds)

Hahaha, even plays Youtube in the default web browser.

An older Pi v2.0 I bought about 5 years ago for $50 wouldn't play Youtube at all.

My security cameras run on it fine. (real fast in the old Midori browser)

I just installed the lite weight email client called 'Claws' and VLC player as well.

All ready to boggie .. for $8

I don't now what blows my mind more ... the size of the Raspberry Pi Zero,
or the size of the SD card hard drive that the free whole operating system is running off of.

That's some alien technology right there.

I'm hooked .. now I want it's quad core big brother .. but that's AU$55
Seemed like a good idea at the time - I was hoping to polish cars with it
but it was only ever good enough to keep my toenails smooth and shiny
Then the battery failed (after only a few charge cycles) so I threw it in the corner and got refunded.

Yesterday I really needed shiny nails so I decided to get the machine out and try it again.
I hoped I could run it wired directly to the charger but it didnt work - not enough amps...

My new design is much better - it spins a bit fast but its now good enough to polish

After the machete clean up last week, I still have the metal bug.
So I grabbed an old 6mm thick metal bar that was laying around doing zip.

Did a google for "knife templates".
Eye balled a few hundred images.
Only one design stood out that I liked.

Width of the stock is 5cm, so I photoshoped the original drawing to 5cm wide
A4 paper is only 29cm long, so I made the template 29cm x 5cm
After cutting it out, it became obvious that the handle was too small,
so a quick cut and stretch of the template.

In hindsight, I should have reprinted the template out to around 31cm x 5cm and just used tape to join the second A4.

Anyways, time to get dusty .. a cleanish surface to make out the template.

In hindsight, I should have cleaned the surface up better for the nikko pen
to stand out better.

I don't have an anvil or good enough neighbors that would put up with me hammering wrought iron from scratch, so for now, it's the cheating stuff with an angel grinder.

Nice yellow sparks while cutting and grinding which means some level of carbon content. Or so they say on my favorite TV show 'Forged In Fire'.

It's taken about 90 minutes with a small hand and bench grinder so far.
Due to the template cut and stretch, I think the blade looks a bit
short compared to the handle. Ow well.

Gotta get down to miter-10 and pick up a good single cut file.
Either that or knock up a swivel rig with my angle grinder on it.
Not sure yet. Probably both.

I'm making a coal forge out of an old portable air compress cut in half, a BBQ plate on top with plaster sand mixed sides and a drilled steel pipe and hair dryer for the blower.

Or I might just get on ebay and by a $10 knife from China?
Nah stuff that. Every bloke should make himself at least one knife in his lifetime.

Almost that time of the decade to pull the aerial mast down and fix aerials, but the tree it's strapped ta has branches that need cleaning off.

My trusty old machete that I us to do that with has been out of action for three years or so after the plastic handle and part of the rear tang snapped off.

Poor old thing - it's been out in the weather long enough.

Wire wheel the rust off.

Top edge used to take beatings with a hammer to help split logs
for the radio shed fire pit. Fire wood chopper Noddy knows
this old machete well.

I was thinking of making a proper handle using corby bolts
and hard wood, but we don't have any hard wood around here.

So, next best thing - cord wrap - trouble is I've never wrapped before
so I went and did a google for "full tang cord wrap"..

http://www.instructables.com/id/Paracord-Wrap/

I forgot to take some extra shots before I finished the wrap.

Basically all that was done before the wrap was...

1. rust removal with a wire wheel
2. ground out the worst dings and changed the overall profile a bit.
3. drilled a hole in the rear for the cord

The wrap technique was easy as pie. Having a hole at the end is a big plus
as it helps stop the wrap sliding down while in use.

The original handle hole that broke, is now a bottle opener.

Easy to remove the wrap. Just undo two knots.

That used patina look with bacon fat rubbed in.

Sure, there's nothing new about cord wrapping or machetes.
This project was about making something useless, useful again.

Poor old tree is going to cop it tomorrow.

growing my bush community out there - I need to make a repeater on top of the hill
to allow comms between gullys for safety and security purposes -
just in case of fire, flood or in the unlikely event of an outbreak of :dimmockturd:

reckon it can be done with 2 baofengs linked together ?

would need 2 leads with 3.5mm plug at one end and 2.5mm plug at the other
and cross em over as they plug in ?

2 battery eliminators, solar panel, 12v battery and cig lighter sockets
with each radio wearing the $4 magnetic wire twanger antenna.....

Transmit on 1watt so no one gets upset with it - beautiful....

Photography, what's ya got?

I've only ever had cheap compact digital cameras the last two years.

First one was a Samsung 12mp, 4x optical zoom. I forget the model.
New from officewanks at the time. Developed a red pixel in the
middle of the screen. It was good as the video format was .avi
and all my pirate editing software only import that format at the time.
Took it back got a refund.

Brother bought an Olympus compact, 10mp, 5x zoom. I kinda borrowed it a fair bit.
Bugger took it back.

Then some cheap plastic twin AA compact Fujitsu off Gumtree for $25
AA batteries pissed me off, and red in video mode looked all pink.
Fucked it off to some gumtree kiwi dumb ass for what I paid for it.

About 5 months ago I found a $25 Panasonic Lumix DMZ-TZ10. ($700 new)
https://www.cnet.com/au/products/panason...10/review/

12.1mp, 12x optical zoom 63x digital. HD 1080x720 video recording

First time I held a compact that was actually heavy and felt solid with its metal frame and skins. I fell in love. But it had a few small speck of duct on the internal lens. Put up with it for a few months. Then I tried to clean it. All went well until on reassemble I cracked the small IR lens (no parts online) that sits right on top of the digital senor. Fark, almost cried.

Stay calm cooter, a broken one for parts might come along.

Last week $20 a TZ-18 16x optical (64x digital) zoom, three batteries and spare changer on gumtree .. cool, parts.
Nah, the IR lens is bigger. Farrrk.
All good, after some stuffing around, it turns out the TZ18 shits on the TZ10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWHjdJ6ZkPI

I'm a sucker for a smaller cameras that fit in a shirt pockek - cheaper than $50 and zoom out 1.1 km Ok to spy on buggers hanging smelly :dimmockturd: over on the spit.

:russell:

Old shit cameras, but zoom wise they still piss on the latest iPhones etc most people only carry around.

This post is for Number 7 who's wanting some remote security ideas.

Per our PM's, this is a basic setup.

With just the camera (1) and the 5v USB powebank (2) I can leave this anywhere
in the yard and it will run for 8+ hours. (haven't tried it longer yet)

Powrbank is one of those cheap 12000 mHa jobs for about $20.

Phone (3) in the picture is a pretend portable wi-fi hotspot.

Most old apple and android phones can be used as portable wi-fi hotspots and usually charge off 5v.

With 1, 2 and 3, this camera can been viewed online from anywhere in the world.

Trouble is 2 and 3 eventually need charging

A good car battery and at least a 20 watt 12v solar panel and cheap charge controller would keep
1, 2 and 3 going around the clock.

One of those cigarette 12v socket (4) things with inbuilt 5v USB outputs are only a few dollars on eBay.

In your case all you'd need is 1, 3, 4, a solar panel, controller and 12v battery.

Some cheap control charges have inbuilt 5v outlets as well.
I've been going through heaps of 9v batteries in my guitar effects pedals.
Bloody things still have 7volts or more in them as they hit the bottom of the bin.
So I thought, why not drain them some how.

I had two el'cheapo voltage regulators laying around I bought online for a few bucks.
So to take my mind off the looming world war three, I slapped a kit together...

http://www.dx.com/p/20083-adjustable-pow...AcLh6JfaSo
Some old cords as well..

Tuned the output to 5 volts...input was around 16 volts.
Now to see if it works. Me fancy multi-use battery charger with 12v and 5v USB input booted up OK and sucked those old 9 volts dry.

I've been doing my own guitar re-wires of late.

The "Hondo" (US company) $25 Fender Strat copy I got from the old tip shop's been
OK up-until late, but the tone and volume pots were starting to get scratchy.

So re-wire time

Had 500k pots in this. (adds more treble)
Fender single coils usually come out with 250k pots.
Had .047 capacitors on the tone pots.
Fender usually use one .022 cap on the last tone pot,
but this wiring has three caps on all three pots.

Another view of the original wiring.

Two new Jap made 250k pots.
The middle pot is now a hole filler.

I went for the one tone control option (.022 cap) that affects all three
pickups which in theory makes life easier. (yes, but with less tone combo choices)

The earth wire to the tremolo isn't installed here yet. If folks are doing their own mods,
make sure you earth out the hardware or risk death.

Schematic used: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wir...ffswitches

Pick-ups tested hot. Resistance is high at 8.5k to 8.8k
which is fine by me. I can lower them a bit for extra finger
picking clearance and added clean single coil quack.

Pickups overall width is wider and length slightly short than the standard gauge.

No junk ceramic bar magnets (come on, who used them in the 60's?)
on these. I'd say Alnico 5's, maybe Alnico 2
The pots are even waxed and have extra earth plates.
Who even does that on cheap guitars anymore?

Hit up Jaycar for x3 spade mini toggles as well.

Now it sounds farking cool and kinda looks like Mark Knopfler's (Dire Straits) S8218 Strat with similar mini toggles installed.

Three toggles allows more pickup options e.g all pick ups off..or all on....or....bridge and neck pick ups on only...as well as the usual settings the original 5 way switch preformed.

El'cheapo guitar, but with the mods I'm happy to use this longer rather than run out and pay $800+ for the same sound from the real thing.

I'm looking for more practice, so if anyone out there wants a free standard or custom re-wire let me know and I'll hack ya axe

Been looking around for a store bought switch box to replace me home made
'Solar Thang v1.0' switch panel, but couldn't find anything cheap enough...

So I gots ta thinking about a v2.0... had one of these 5.25" external dvd hard drive caddies with rooted inner bits...

Trip to Jaycar founds me a pre-wired marine switch (CAT. NO. SZ1900) for $20, and a 12v to 5v USB dash mount
kit (CAT. NO. PS2016) for $10...

Snuck a 12v cigarette lighter socket into the end -- it was too long to place next to the USB

Wished there was a wee bit more room for one of those tiny $5 Jaycar multimeters (CAT. NO. QM1502) that
run off one 12v battery. I would have hard wired and mounted that inside with the volts reading on full time.

Ow well, in v3.0 maybe.
