I actually used one of those irons for a few years as I didn't at the time know any better.
I managed to build, in the traditional "breadboard" way, on a piece of wood with nails in it, many a circuit, some actually worked!
I remember that I had to get the iron really HOT to melt the solder onto the nails in the timber
The Scope iron actually can get so hot the tip glows red!
I tied using a car battery once before I got the proper transformer, which by the way is 3.3 volts at 30 amps!
Rule 1, DO NOT USE CAR BATTERY, iron will not turn off and wires will burn!

Put it together, but haven't tried it yet (been in bed all day watching American Restoration reruns)
Aligator clip holders wont last very long beofre the plaistc breaks, but for the money it's cool.
Did you get one as well?
I'll post a pic tomorrow

I thought about getting one, but as I already have about 10 it would feel unloved
Actually I have 2 that I use all the time, my trusty Dick Smith t2000 I bought many years ago, and a Weller station for the heavy duty work.
Price was good though Ill admit and very tempting
Pity they didn't have cheap solder to go with it, I can always use more of that! Or maybe solder wick.

Heya Fellas just popping in again. Bit crazy around here recently and kinda a life change in schedules kinda sucks! On top of that have been in my man cave coz of sick again and a nice ear infection to boot..
Nice Iron there! I can hardly soldier but bought a 100w iron from Jaycar because i was sick of having to wait years for anything to suck the soldier in. lol You would think that 100w is to much for most jobs but it works great for plugs and if we ever need to do a PA - transistor transplant this is the perfect iron for it so you ready to go Chopper!!
On the mend and will catch up with you very soon Cooter.
P.S Ya its not just the ACMA that is being shafted with jobs its almost everything out there really.. I think Gary is lucky in this case to be living in the "hard times" era where "we don't care" applies to many things where as back in the day would have been jumped on. :mumum:

Ow DaVo, you're sick again? You need a drafty caravan in the backyard to live in.
I've been walk around in a singlet, shorts and thongs without a sniffle all year.
Finally got around to breaking the hymen on my new iron..
30 watts of pure powerrrrrrrrrrrr...soldering my new adjustable voltage gizmos...
Well, only $13 and not so great, but eventually did the job.
Still no word from the ACMA. :mumum:
I'll email 'em again tomorrow.
Hahahahahahahaha, its not that big really Chopper and actually has a very nice pointy precise tip only difference is it gets REAL fking hot.
Good for plugs as well because i use good Teflon and Amphanol ones not the china junk so works very well.
That's pretty good for the price Cooter, nice little unit.
Yaa, i iz sick again, ear infection is all good now just the left over flu crap. Problem is i come into contact with a lot more people than you do Cooter which is how you get sick the majority of the time. Especially kids, they carry all sorts of things and spread it everywhere especially ones that go to kindergarten and day care and i have been around lots of kids lately with crap coming out of there nose and they rubbing it all over there face.. Mmmm Lovely!
Fking ACMA jokers, what the fk is going on with 3?? Gary hasn't responded since his "don't hold your breath" comment to me. :mumum:

Sorry to hear about Jessie, I know how it feels to loose a pet.
RIP Jessie
