Why don't you try and repack that battery pack with decent cells?
I used to get Battery World on Smith street to repack laptop battery packs for me back in the day, they did a good job and not too pricey.
If you want to try it yourself, I put the packs in a vyce and tap along the welded seam with a tack hammer, they usually crack right open.
Or alternately you could rig up a 4 volt power supply and cord up the tools butt and use it that way
