Looks like we gots an unhappy dieload, err, diode.

Nothing else looks crusty except the small area near the power input.

Looks like a reverse polarity protection diode.
Only works if there is actually a fuse in the power supply leads. The idea is that the diode conducts on reverse polarity and draws so much current from the power supply the fuse blows, normal operation the diode is reverse biased and does bugger all. Looks like its been cooking away there for quite some time and has likely damaged tracks nearby. If its that its an easy fix. I can wire in a trick so that never happens again. I guess ill find out Monday eh?

I can report Dr Chopper had a successful operation today on Vince's long time love -- his 20 year old BearCat scanner.
Blown bits were the diode seen in the pic, the three legged thingy that limits power which was literally blown in half, a couple of resisters, couple capacitors, burnt out motherboard tracks, and a rooted audio amplifier. I slipped down to Jaycar and to grab a new audio TDA7245 amplifier for the Doc to slip in. Before the big bang, the audio was low anyways - not anymore. She's pumpin now. All Vince's added channels are OK and it's working like new. Moral of the story - use a fuse in you power cables. (one was added today as well)

Dr Chopper sounds like a true genius
Wonder if his skills would be useful on this..... It is also 20 years old (I bought second hand about 15 yrs ago for $50, thought I got a bargain!!  Used to work, but only on reversed polarity power supply, batteries never worked for it It would only make weird garble noises when it received anything unless I ran it on 7.5v instead of the recommended 9v from the power supply, now makes no sounds at all. Its all yours Cooter if you want it and pass on to your doctor or whatever you want to do with it Throw it at trespassers perhaps......
