In the meantime gather together the following bits, if you cant find something let me know I probably have a few of whatever it is
1 12 volt plug pack rated at 1 amp or more doesn't matter if its ac or dc, we are going to gut it anyway
or even a 12 to 20 volt smelly transformer out of something, about the size of your fist.
1 bridge rectifier, any old one out of a tellie will do
1 470 uF or bigger capacitor up to say 2200 uF and rated at 35 volts or thereabouts
1 10 uF or 22 uF capacitor rated at 35 volts, more old tellie bits.
1 7812 IC it has 3 legs looks like a power transistor, black resin body and has a metal top with a bolt hole in it,
even better if you can find an LM317 IC looks the same, might have LM7812 or LM317, but first 2 letters may be almost anything, depends on who made the bugger.
4 smelly old diodes, like 1N4148 or 1n4004 1N4148's look like those tiny glass and red diodes that tellies have in them, 1N4004s are usually black with a white band on them
1 heatsink to suit the IC, one out of an old tellie is good, about 4 inches square or so, or a hunk of old aluminium about the same size
1 fuse holder and 1 1amp fuse
1 switch for the power, so it should be a power type switch, it will have 250 VAC written on it, doesn't have to be one that will do 10 AMPS though
old power cord with 3 wires, we want to earth this bugger.
1 led to show the power is on and things are happening
1 resistor to suit the led, anything around 470 ohms (yellow violet brown bands) to 1 000 ohms (black brown orange bands) will do, we'll sort it out 'cause it depends on the colour of the led
some sort of box to bung it in, even an ice cream container or old DVD disk stack box, a weatherproof box would be nice
some scrap wires and croc clips
More later...

Well, I have the cluttered desk, I guess that's a start!
